Interview in Aftonbladet

Sveapsykologernas psychologist David Waskuri is interviewed by Aftonbladet about ADD and ADHD

ADD investigation

An ADD assessment can be done by a doctor or a psychologist. The assessment aims to determine whether you have symptoms of ADD and to make a diagnosis. It can also help rule out other causes of your symptoms, such as other psychiatric disorders or medical conditions.

An ADD investigation may involve different methods of collecting information, such as

  1. A thorough medical examination, including a review of your medical history.

  2. A psychological evaluation, including an interview with you and any caregivers or teachers to get a more detailed picture of your symptoms.

  3. Different types of tests, such as cognitive tests to examine your ability to think, learn and remember, or behavioral tests to examine your behaviors and reactions.

It can take time to carry out an ADD assessment and several different tests and interviews may be required before a diagnosis can be made.

What is ADD?

If you have had problems concentrating since childhood, often forget things, have difficulty keeping things in order and completing tasks, but do not experience problems with overactivity, such as difficulty sitting still or doing things without thinking, you may have ADD.

Difference between ADD and ADHD

ADD and ADHD are two different forms of neuropsychiatric disorder that are both characterized by difficulties in concentrating attention and keeping it focused for an extended period of time. They may also have similar symptoms such as difficulties with organization, problems with impulsivity and outbursts of unwanted behaviours.

However, there is an important difference between ADD and ADHD. ADD, or Attention Deficit Disorder, is a form of disorder where the symptoms mainly involve difficulties in concentrating attention. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a form of the disorder where symptoms also include excessive restlessness and hyperactivity. This means that people with ADHD may have difficulty sitting still and controlling their movements, whereas this is not a symptom of ADD.

There are various treatments available to help people with ADD or ADHD manage their symptoms and improve their ability to concentrate and organize.

Some examples of symptoms of ADD:

You may have difficulty concentrating. You may have difficulty with or avoid long tasks such as homework. You may have difficulty completing tasks at school and at home. You may find it difficult to focus even on play. You may have difficulty keeping track of things and staying organized. You may not seem to listen when someone is talking to you. You may find it difficult to focus on details. You may make careless mistakes. You may have difficulty following instructions.

Because ADD produces symptoms that are not as outwardly obvious, it often takes longer to get a diagnosis of ADD than other ADHD diagnoses. There is no single ADD test. To be diagnosed, you need a neuropsychiatric assessment.

The most important thing with ADD, as with other forms of ADHD, is to learn more about the condition. Knowledge and a better understanding of how ADD works can make it easier for you to accept the situation and find new ways to live with your diagnosis.

It can also help you to see the opportunities that exist, in addition to the difficulties. Sometimes it can also be helpful to talk to someone about your difficulties.

ADD is treated like other forms of ADHD, with a combination of different kinds of support and help at school or at work. Sometimes ADD is also treated with medication. Seek professional help if you suspect that you or your child has problems related to ADD.
