Anger is one of our basic emotions. It is needed to be able to speak up and set limits. It is called functional anger. Then there is also the non-productive anger that causes problems for yourself and your relationships. The feeling is not wrong but the way the person acts out the anger is wrong. In therapy, you analyze both where the anger comes from, what is in the background and you also learn how to deal with the anger by understanding triggers, vulnerabilities, and what to do before and when the feeling comes so that it does not take you over. Therapy can teach you how to put your thoughts and feelings into words without having to have impulsive outbursts along the way.

In therapy, you will learn that an experience consists of both internal experiences: i.e. previous baggage, current state of mind, etc. as well as external experiences such as someone being unpleasant to you, being criticized, etc. In therapy, you can both learn about what has shaped you to become who you are and learn to understand yourself better in the moment so that you can deal with your difficult feelings that are causing you problems now. For example, if you let your anger take over, you can learn in therapy how to find constructive ways to deal with it so that you don't continue to destroy your relationships. Anger is usually referred to as a secondary emotion, meaning that there are feelings behind the anger such as frustration, fear (your primary emotions) et. c. If you learn to verbalize your primary emotions, others can understand you better and you can get your message across in a more functional way.
