What is stress management?

Sveapsykologerna offers companies stress management both preventively and for those affected by stress and fatigue syndrome. We also offer managerial coaching so that employers can effectively learn to manage employees who have stress problems and prevent employees from ending up in dangerous stress.

The body needs a balance between stress and recovery. Being exposed to prolonged stress can lead to reduced resilience; physically, cognitively and psychologically. Several negative events may have accumulated and eventually the straw that breaks the camel's back leads to a stress reaction. The causes of stress symptoms can be work-related or personal problems, for example. Professional support can help you sort out and identify the areas and issues causing the stress.

By learning more about yourself, your abilities and limitations, you can regain balance in your life and find the approach and inner strength to make the changes you need to take better care of yourself. Often, practicing healthy self-assertion is an important part of the treatment, where the person learns to listen to their needs, feelings, thoughts and desires and to meet them. Setting boundaries is also an important part of stress management.

Sveapsykologerna has extensive experience of working with employees in many different types of complex organizations. We use effective tools that can counteract the problems that usually arise in different types of difficult situations. Stress management can be provided through individual talks, lectures or group discussions.

Stress reactions can be divided into four groups: cognitive, physiological, emotional and behavioral stress reactions. Cognitive stress reactions can include fragmented thoughts, difficulty concentrating on one thing at a time, forgetfulness, losing words in the middle of a conversation or not being mentally present in the moment but constantly focused on the next 'must do', and negative thoughts about not having enough time, not being able to cope and not being able to cope. Physiological stress reactions can be triggered when the body, mind and brain do not get enough rest and time to recover. Reactions can include headaches, fatigue, lack of desire, difficulty sleeping, stomach upset, dizziness, anxiety, sweating and palpitations. A stressed person is also at increased risk of panic attacks. Behavioral stress reactions can include difficulties with multitasking, short-term thinking, impulsive decision-making and a tendency to make more mistakes than usual. Abandoning hobbies and isolating oneself can also be symptoms of stress. Reactions can also manifest themselves in the form of increased consumption of coffee, sugar, food, alcohol or pills.

Emotional stress reactions can manifest themselves through increased sensitivity to demands, resignation, emptiness, meaninglessness and emotional imbalance; for example, "short fuse" or easy crying. Sometimes the stress is linked to a temporary or fundamental low self-esteem, high self-demands, difficulties in saying no or making your own choices and a weak confidence in being able to influence the situation; that is, a feeling of lack of control and lack of support. In therapy, you will have the opportunity to clarify your situation. With greater insight into the factors that contribute to imbalance and are obstacles to your well-being, changes can become possible and your options for action can be broadened. Prolonged stress with too little recovery can lead to fatigue syndrome. Stress management is used both for preventive purposes and when the person is close to or has crossed the threshold of fatigue syndrome.
